Guild Wars has 4 million copies sold, they haven't released how many actually play online at once though.

WoW was around first.

One thing to keep in mind with WoW is that WoW's 9 million players is split amoung many different servers that run the game.
GW players are all on one server.

It's also worth remembering that WoW is monthly subs whereas GW is buy once play 'forever'; as such I would imagine that GW has more casual players and yet boasts more value for money and has more players that may drop off for a while then come back.

WoW has been around longer, but I couldn't tell you by how much; I'm far too tight with my cash to fork out every month so never played it

GW has been around for about 2 and a half years now.

WoW is WAAAAAY diffrent from gw(I have a account)

Likes:

--->you can be elfs and not all human

--->you meet other lvls every town and in battle *with monsters*

--->Theres a good guy and bad guys

--->you can cook things and fish

Dislikes:

--->It takes ages to gain a lvl

--->very hard to understand the SMALL skills and spells

--->not a noobish game/takes ages to understand it all

--->Very bad graphics

--->The people are ugly and fat*no offence*

--->the quests are harder

ect...

I prefer gw for the main reason:

Fact

Blizzard have admited that figues they use are NOT REPEAT NOT the current number of players but the TOTAL number of people who have EVER played the game even if they only downloaded the trail version.

Opinion

Even the figures are the total number of people who ever played in anyway. I still think thier over inflated by quite a bit.

Actually the figures are around 9 million and they are for CURRENT players on WoW. They dont count trial or discontiued accounts.

No the figures are NOT for current players and yes they DO count everyone who has ever played in anyway.

If wow DID have 9 million active players then blizzard would be makeing (9*15) $135 million per month and $405 million per quater. Since its parent company took in only $282 milllion in the last quater i can find records for and blizzard only accounts for about half its earnings. Blizzard's takeings for that period were about $140 million all most a third of what it should be IF they had 9 million users.

So either blizzards parent company are engaged in a MASSIVE fraud or thier useing everyone whos ever played the game to try and con more people in to playing thier crappy game. Which do you think it is, bearing in mind. One option will land you in jail for a LONG time and the other is just a legal marketing ploy.

Well, just saying, not that i like WoW much, but it is pretty big. I have almost never seen Guild Wars on a top ten played list at any site. Im going to have to agree that at least 9 million players play WoW. I wish that every day we would have as many people online playing guildwars :-(.....

All companies present their sales figures in the most attractive light. No one wants to buy a product that isn't selling well.

Before thinking that the sales represent the quality of the game, keep in mind that WoW had a large fan base from the standalone versions that preceded the online one and took advantage of that in their well-developed marketing. GW started from scratch with an unknown game and took almost a year to reach one million units sold due to a lack of focused marketing.

i wont lie to u and say gw is way better so we get 1 more "recruit". their both good games, but both have their ups and downs
GUILD WARS:
1. level cap. this is a big deal because, if u know what youre doing, u can get a lvl 20 in ~2 days, getting u into higher level gameplay faster. less grind=more fun
2. graphics. im not saying the graphics in wow are worse, just different. way more cartooney and unrealistic. guild wars is more realistic and, imo, better
3. free. guild wars doesnt have a monthly fee, so u can play for a while, then take a break without having to feel pressured to play more.

keep in mind tho, their both good games. i personally like gw bc i dont have to spend 7-8 months on 1 char to get into high-level gameplay. i have 6-7 lvl 20 pve's and they all get playtime in elite areas of the game, and i havent been playing for like 3 years (ps, ik gws only been around for 2).

Keep in mind that GW does the same thing. I bought NF, Factions, and the original GW and linked all my accounts. Techically, I'm three people (not a religious blasaphamy guys... I swear ). All companies have some way to inflate their sales figures.
The leason of course is... trust no one.

Guild Wars HAS been in a top ten list. I'll find my magazine. (Don't raise your hopes. I can barely remember where I left it.) But I remember WoW being number 1 and GW being number 3.

WoW and GW are entirely different games indeed. From what I've played of WoW today, it seems to be more about roleplaying with different races, racial bonuses and living a seperate life.

GW is definitely more about being involved in a story and fighting wars to save the world. The story can be absolutely involving at times (Prophecies mainly) and there's no such thing as the best item that gives you a definite edge over another player.

If you're looking for getting a higher level to have an advantage over others, a rare sword that has a significant power over others and having control over different races, WoW is your best bet.

If you're looking for a strong story, items meaning nothing more than aesthetics and only your skill defining victory or failure, then GW is the game for you.

As for the whole argument of who has more people, it doesn't really sway personal preference when it comes to a game. I mean look at the thousands who played Pong.

Guild Wars has been listed on the top ten games most hours played list that shows when I log on to xfire since it came out. It's somewhere around 5 or 6. WoW shows as 1. I would assume that is a decent indicator of how many people play it.
